What is UUID v5?
A UUID v5 is a deterministic UUID based on SHA-1. Given a namespace UUID and a name, it produces the same UUID every time. This is the recommended name-based UUID for new systems; UUID v3 uses MD5 and is retained only for compatibility.
Use v5 when you need stable identifiers: e.g. a per-user ID derived from an email address, or a per-resource ID derived from a URL, that stays the same across systems and generations.
FAQ
v5 vs v3
Both produce deterministic UUIDs. v5 uses SHA-1 and is preferred for new systems. v3 uses MD5 and exists for backwards compatibility.
What namespaces does this support?
The four RFC 4122 standard namespaces (DNS, URL, OID, X500) plus any custom namespace UUID you provide.
Are these values secret?
No. Anyone with the same namespace and name will produce the same UUID. Do not use v3/v5 for confidential identifiers.
Can I get a different UUID for the same name?
Yes, by using a different namespace. The namespace acts as a domain separator.
