What is temperature conversion?
Three temperature scales are in common use: Celsius (used by most of the world and in science), Fahrenheit (used in the United States), and Kelvin (used in physics, where 0 K is absolute zero). Converting between them requires simple arithmetic, but the formulas are easy to mix up.
FAQ
What is absolute zero?
-273.15 -C or -459.67 -F or 0 K. Temperatures below absolute zero are physically impossible for ordinary matter.
Why does the US use Fahrenheit?
Fahrenheit was defined in 1724 and spread across the British Empire. Most countries switched to Celsius in the 20th century; the US, the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, and a few others retained Fahrenheit for everyday use.
Is Kelvin written with a degree symbol?
No. Kelvin is an absolute scale, so the symbol is just K, not -K.
