What is RIPEMD-160?
RIPEMD-160 is a 160-bit cryptographic hash designed in 1996 by Hans Dobbertin, Antoon Bosselaers, and Bart Preneel. It was the hash used by Bitcoin for address generation and script hashing, and it appears in OpenPGP alongside SHA-1.
The RIPEMD family has no known practical attacks on the 160-bit variant. It remains secure for existing uses, but new systems should prefer SHA-256 or SHA-3.
FAQ
Is RIPEMD-160 safe?
Yes for current use. No practical collision attack exists. New designs should use SHA-256 or SHA-3.
Why does Bitcoin use RIPEMD-160?
Bitcoin addresses are RIPEMD160(SHA256(pubkey)). This produces a 20-byte hash, which is short enough to encode in Base58Check as a 25-34 character address.
Why does my output differ from another tool?
Confirm input encoding, whitespace, and line endings. Also check the output encoding (hex vs Base64).
