What is DEFLATE?
DEFLATE (RFC 1951) is the raw compression algorithm underneath GZIP and zlib. It has no header, no trailer, and no metadata: just a stream of compressed bytes. This makes it smaller per payload but it requires out-of-band information about the original data.
How to use
Type or paste text. The tool compresses with raw DEFLATE and shows the result in Base64 (default) or Hex. Feed the output back into DEFLATE Decompress to recover the original.
Use DEFLATE when you control both ends of the channel and want the smallest possible overhead. Use GZIP or zlib when you want the format to be self-describing.
FAQ
DEFLATE vs GZIP
GZIP = DEFLATE + header (with magic bytes, compression method) + CRC-32 trailer + length. GZIP can be identified from the first two bytes (1f 8b); raw DEFLATE cannot.
DEFLATE vs zlib
zlib adds a lighter header (RFC 1950) with an Adler-32 trailer. Use zlib when the recipient expects that exact format.
