What is SHAKE?
SHAKE (Secure Hash Algorithm and KECCAK) is an extendable-output function (XOF) from the SHA-3 family, standardized in FIPS 202. Unlike a fixed hash, SHAKE can produce any number of output bytes.
SHAKE128 offers roughly 128-bit security, SHAKE256 offers roughly 256-bit. They are used in cryptographic protocols, key derivation, and anywhere a variable-length output is useful.
FAQ
What output length should I use?
64 bytes (512 bits) is a common default. For key derivation, match the key size your protocol expects.
Is SHAKE the same as SHA-3?
Both are built on the Keccak sponge. SHA-3 fixes the output length; SHAKE lets you pick it.
What is SHAKE used for?
Cryptographic protocols (Ed448, Kyber), key derivation, and message authentication.
