What is SHA-224?
SHA-224 is a 224-bit variant of SHA-256, defined in FIPS 180-4. It uses the same compression function as SHA-256 but with different initial values and produces a 224-bit (28-byte) output. SHA-224 is used where a shorter hash than SHA-256 is needed and the SHA-2 family is already a requirement.
How to calculate SHA-224
Type or paste text. The tool hashes the UTF-8 bytes by default; you can also input Hex or Base64.
For example, the UTF-8 text abc produces a hash that starts with 23097d22.
FAQ
SHA-224 vs SHA-256
SHA-224 produces a shorter output with 112-bit collision resistance (vs 128 for SHA-256). Both are considered secure.
Where is SHA-224 used?
Some TLS configurations, embedded systems with limited space, and any system that wants SHA-256's construction with a smaller output. It is less common than SHA-256.
Is my input sent anywhere?
No. Hashing runs entirely in your browser using hash-wasm.
