What is a slug?

A slug is the URL-friendly version of a title or name. It uses lowercase letters, digits, and hyphens instead of spaces or punctuation. Slugs improve readability in URLs (e.g. /blog/my-first-post) and are better for search engines than query parameters.

FAQ

Why lowercase?

URLs are case-sensitive. Lowercase slugs are easier to type, remember, and share. They also avoid duplicate URLs that differ only by case.

Why hyphens and not underscores?

Google treats hyphens as word separators and underscores as part of the word. For SEO, prefer hyphens.

Are accented characters removed?

By default, they are transliterated to their ASCII equivalent (- to e, - to u). Some slugs keep the Unicode characters; enable the option if you prefer that.

What length should a slug be?

Under 60 characters is good. Long slugs get truncated in search results.
