What is HTML stripping?
HTML stripping removes markup tags and leaves only the visible text. It is useful for extracting readable content from web pages, converting rich text to plain text for storage or indexing, and cleaning up HTML that has been pasted into a plain text field.
This tool uses the browser built-in HTML parser. The input is parsed into a detached document, scripts and styles are removed, block-level elements are separated by line breaks, and the resulting text is extracted. Nothing is rendered and no script is executed.
How to use
Paste HTML into the input box. The output is the plain text content. Anchor links are dropped but their text is preserved. Entity references are decoded, so an encoded ampersand becomes a plain ampersand.
Common gotchas
Two things to watch for. First, the tool strips tags but does not sanitize URLs or attributes. If you need to store untrusted HTML safely, use a dedicated sanitizer. Second, whitespace between inline elements is preserved, but whitespace between block elements is normalized. This matches how a browser would render the page.
FAQ
Does the HTML get rendered?
No. The parser runs in a detached context and the resulting DOM is discarded. No images are loaded, no scripts are executed, and no styles are applied.
What happens to scripts and styles?
Both are removed entirely. Script and style content does not appear in the output, which is usually what you want for text extraction.
How are line breaks handled?
Block-level elements like paragraphs, divs, and headings are separated by newlines. Three or more blank lines are collapsed to two. Trailing whitespace on each line is trimmed.
Can I strip a whole web page?
Yes, but you need to fetch the HTML first. Use your browser view source or a fetch tool to get the raw HTML, then paste it here. The tool is fully offline.
