What is Keccak-384 file hashing?

Keccak-384 is the pre-standard version of SHA-3, submitted to the NIST competition in 2008 by the Keccak team (Daemen and Van Assche). It produces a 384-bit (48-byte) fingerprint, shown as 96 hexadecimal characters.

The only difference from the final SHA-3 standard is the padding byte: Keccak uses 0x01, SHA-3 uses 0x06. This tiny change produces completely different output for the same input. Ethereum's keccak256 is this pre-standard variant, which is why Ethereum hashes do not match SHA3-256.

How to use

Drag, click, or paste a file. The tool streams the file in chunks and computes Keccak-384 as it reads. It also accepts a URL; the server must allow cross-origin requests.

Keccak vs SHA-3

Keccak-256 (this pre-standard version) is used by Ethereum for address derivation, transaction hashing, and smart contract storage keys. If you are verifying Ethereum data, you need Keccak, not SHA3. For all other purposes, use the SHA-3 sibling tools.

FAQ

Are files uploaded?

No. Everything runs locally in your browser. Files are streamed in chunks and never sent anywhere.

Why is my checksum different from the vendor's?

Confirm you have the exact same file. A re-download that includes any trailer or redirect can produce a different hash. Read the file in binary mode; text modes can alter line endings.

How large a file can I hash?

Any size your browser can open. Files are streamed in chunks, so memory use stays flat regardless of file size.

Can I verify a signed download with this?

It verifies the file matches the checksum you were given. The security of the verification depends on where the checksum came from: HTTPS from the vendor is far better than a checksum posted in a forum.

Command line equivalent
# Python
pip install pycryptodome
python3 -c 'from Crypto.Hash import keccak; k = keccak.new(digest_bits=384); k.update(open("myfile.bin","rb").read()); print(k.hexdigest())'
