What is MD5?

MD5 is a hash function that turns any input into a 128-bit fingerprint, usually written as 32 hexadecimal characters. The same input always produces the same output, so MD5 is useful for detecting accidental changes and verifying file integrity when the expected hash comes from a trusted source.

MD5 was standardized in RFC 1321. It is no longer considered safe against intentional collisions, so it should not be used for digital signatures, certificates, or password storage.

How to calculate an MD5 hash

Type or paste your text into the input box. The tool computes the hash automatically. Use the Input Encoding selector when your input is Hex, Base64, or UTF-16 rather than plain UTF-8 text.

For example, the UTF-8 text abc produces:

900150983cd24fb0d6963f7d28e17f72

MD5 and HMAC-MD5

Enable HMAC to add a secret key to the hash. HMAC-MD5 produces a different result from plain MD5 and is used in some legacy authentication protocols. The key is treated as bytes, so choose the correct Key Encoding before typing.

For new systems, prefer HMAC-SHA-256. HMAC-MD5 remains valid for interoperability with existing protocols.

Frequently asked questions

Can MD5 securely hash passwords?

No. MD5 is fast and collision-broken. Use Argon2, scrypt, or bcrypt for password storage.

Why does another MD5 tool return a different value?

Check the exact input bytes, character encoding, whitespace, and line endings. Also confirm that neither tool has HMAC enabled and that both display the result using the same output encoding.

Is MD5 case-sensitive?

The input is case-sensitive; abc and ABC produce different hashes. The output is usually written in lowercase hex, but this tool also shows uppercase.
