What is URL decoding?
URL decoding reverses percent-encoding, converting sequences like %20 back to their original characters. It is used to read values from query strings, path segments, and form submissions.
Decoding modes
Component mode (decodeURIComponent) decodes everything, including %2F back to /. Use this for individual values.
Full URI mode (decodeURI) preserves reserved URL characters. Use this on whole URLs.
Form mode additionally converts + to space, matching application/x-www-form-urlencoded semantics.
Frequently asked questions
Why does decoding fail on % followed by invalid hex?
Percent-encoding requires exactly two hex digits after %. Sequences like %ZZ or %2 at the end are invalid and will produce an error.
