What is SHA-512/224 and SHA-512/256?
SHA-512/224 and SHA-512/256 are truncated variants of SHA-512, standardized in FIPS 180-4. They use the same compression function as SHA-512 but with different initial values and produce shorter outputs.
FAQ
Why not just truncate SHA-512?
Truncating SHA-512 produces a different value and does not provide the same security guarantee. SHA-512/224 and SHA-512/256 are defined with their own initial values to avoid length-extension attacks.
Is it as secure as SHA-256?
Yes. SHA-512/256 provides 256 bits of security, equivalent to SHA-256.
