What is SHA3-512 file hashing?

SHA3-512 is the 512-bit variant of SHA-3, standardized by NIST in FIPS 202. It produces a 512-bit (64-byte) fingerprint of a file, shown as 128 hexadecimal characters.

SHA-3 is built on the Keccak sponge construction and is a mandatory companion to SHA-2 in every modern cryptographic standard, including TLS 1.3, SSH, and post-quantum signature schemes. It is not a replacement for SHA-2 - both are considered secure - but SHA-3 provides defense in depth if SHA-2 is ever broken.

How to use

Drag, click, or paste a file. The tool streams the file in chunks and computes SHA3-512 as it reads. It also accepts a URL; the server must allow cross-origin requests.

The SHA-3 family

SHA-3 comes in four fixed-output variants (224, 256, 384, 512) and two extendable-output variants (SHAKE128, SHAKE256). This tool implements the 512-bit variant. For other variants, see the sibling tools.

FAQ

Are files uploaded?

No. Everything runs locally in your browser. Files are streamed in chunks and never sent anywhere.

Why is my checksum different from the vendor's?

Confirm you have the exact same file. A re-download that includes any trailer or redirect can produce a different hash. Read the file in binary mode; text modes can alter line endings.

How large a file can I hash?

Any size your browser can open. Files are streamed in chunks, so memory use stays flat regardless of file size.

Can I verify a signed download with this?

It verifies the file matches the checksum you were given. The security of the verification depends on where the checksum came from: HTTPS from the vendor is far better than a checksum posted in a forum.

Command line equivalent
# OpenSSL 3.x
openssl dgst -sha3-512 myfile.bin

# Python
python3 -c 'import hashlib; print(hashlib.file_digest(open("myfile.bin","rb"), "sha3_512").hexdigest())'
