What is SHA-1?
SHA-1 is a cryptographic hash function standardized in RFC 3174. It produces a 160-bit digest, shown as 40 hexadecimal characters. In 2017 the SHAttered attack demonstrated a practical collision, so SHA-1 is no longer recommended for security-sensitive uses such as digital signatures or certificates.
Where is SHA-1 still used?
Git uses SHA-1 to identify commits and objects. Some legacy systems, VPN protocols, and older TLS configurations still rely on it. HMAC-SHA-1 remains secure for message authentication with a strong key. For new designs, prefer SHA-256 or SHA-3.
FAQ
Is SHA-1 safe for passwords?
No. Use Argon2, scrypt, or bcrypt for password storage.
Why does my SHA-1 differ from another tool?
Check character encoding, line endings, and whether either tool has HMAC enabled.
