What is Lorem Ipsum?
Lorem Ipsum is placeholder text used in design, publishing, and typesetting. It is derived from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, written in 45 BC. The words are Latin, but the text is intentionally scrambled - the goal is to look like real language without being readable, so reviewers focus on layout and typography instead of content.
The point is psychological. When a draft contains real words, readers skip over the design and start editing the copy. When it contains Lorem Ipsum, they see the shape of the page and nothing else. The convention has held for five centuries.
How to use
Pick a unit and a count. Three units are available:
- Paragraphs - classic blocks of text, separated by blank lines.
- Sentences - a single block of complete sentences.
- Words - a single run of words ending in a period.
The output is deterministic: the same settings produce the same text every time, so a shared link reproduces the exact paragraph. Change the seed or press Regenerate for fresh content.
Two options change the shape of the output. "Start with Lorem ipsum" prepends the canonical opening phrase. "Wrap paragraphs in <p> tags" emits HTML-ready markup instead of plain text - useful when pasting into a template.
FAQ
Is the text real Latin?
Partly. The canonical opening - "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit..." - is a lightly scrambled excerpt from Cicero, with words reordered to break meaning while preserving the visual pattern of Latin. The rest of the standard word list has accumulated from various Latin texts over the centuries; it is a convention, not a fixed corpus. Nobody reads it as Latin; it is a texture, not a language.
Why does my Lorem Ipsum not start with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet"?
The generator prepends the canonical phrase when "Start with Lorem ipsum" is enabled. If it is disabled, the first word is a random pick from the word list. Most design tools expect the canonical opening, so it is on by default.
Is the output different every time I use the tool?
No. Output depends on the settings and on the seed. The same settings and the same seed produce the same text, always. This makes the output reproducible and shareable. Press Regenerate to roll a new seed and produce different content.
What is a seed?
A number that starts the pseudorandom generator. Different seeds produce different text. The seed is included in the shareable URL, so a link you send reproduces the exact output.
Can I use the output commercially?
Yes. Lorem Ipsum is not copyrighted - it is a 2,000-year-old text with no rights holder. Placeholder text is not covered by the license of any specific generator; it is a convention, and any tool that produces it is producing the same thing.
