What is SHA-512?
SHA-512 is a member of the SHA-2 family, standardized by NIST in FIPS 180-4. It produces a 512-bit (64-byte) digest, shown as 128 hexadecimal characters. SHA-512 is fast on 64-bit CPUs and is used in code signing, key derivation, and anywhere a strong, long hash is required.
How to calculate SHA-512
Type or paste text into the input box. The tool uses the browser's native Web Crypto API.
For example, the UTF-8 text abc produces a hash that starts with ddaf35a193617aba.
HMAC-SHA-512
Enable HMAC to add a secret key. HMAC-SHA-512 is used by some protocol variants and is the strongest HMAC in the SHA-2 family.
FAQ
SHA-512 vs SHA-256
SHA-512 uses 64-bit words and is faster on 64-bit CPUs, but produces a longer output. Both are secure. Use SHA-512 when you want maximum collision resistance.
Is SHA-512 safe?
Yes. No practical attacks are known.
