What is Base32?
Base32 is a binary-to-text encoding that uses 32 characters (A-Z and 2-7), defined in RFC 4648. It is less compact than Base64 (about 60% overhead vs 33%), but produces output that is case-insensitive and easy to read aloud, which makes it useful in DNS, TOTP secrets, and case-insensitive identifiers.
How to encode
Type or paste text. The tool encodes the UTF-8 bytes as Base32 with padding.
For example, hello encodes to NBSWY3DP.
FAQ
Base32 vs Base64
Base64 is more compact. Base32 avoids look-alike characters and is case-insensitive, which matters in DNS and human-typed secrets.
What is the padding for?
Base32 output is padded with = to a multiple of 8 characters. Padding is required by RFC 4648 but often stripped in URLs and tokens.
