What is SHA-512?

SHA-512 produces a 512-bit (64-byte) fingerprint. It is the strongest hash in the SHA-2 family and is used in code signing, key derivation, and where maximum collision resistance is required. On 64-bit CPUs it is often faster than SHA-256.

How to use

Drag, click, or paste a file. The tool streams the file in chunks and computes SHA-512 as it reads.

FAQ

Are files uploaded?

No. Everything runs locally.

Do I need SHA-512 instead of SHA-256?

Almost never. SHA-256 has no known practical attacks. Use SHA-512 if a standard requires it or if you want an extra margin.

Why is SHA-512 sometimes faster than SHA-256?

SHA-512 uses 64-bit operations. On modern 64-bit CPUs it processes the same number of bytes per cycle as SHA-256 while doing more mixing per block.
