What is GZIP?
GZIP (RFC 1952) wraps a DEFLATE stream (RFC 1951) with a header and a CRC-32 trailer. It is the most widely supported compression format on the web: HTTP responses, tar archives, and countless file formats use it. Almost every browser, server, and operating system can decompress GZIP.
How to use
Type or paste text. The tool compresses with GZIP and shows the result in Base64 (default) or Hex. Copy the output or switch the encoding. The compressed result is only useful as a blob: feed it back into the GZIP Decompress tool to recover the original text.
Compression benefits depend on repetition. Short unique strings often get larger after GZIP overhead.
FAQ
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Compression runs entirely in your browser using fflate, a small MIT-licensed JavaScript library.
Why is my output larger than the input?
GZIP adds about 18 bytes of header and trailer. For short inputs this overhead exceeds any savings.
How do I decompress?
Paste the Base64 (or Hex) into GZIP Decompress. The result is the original text.
Is GZIP secure?
No. GZIP is compression, not encryption. Anyone can decompress it.
