SHA-1 File
Compute the SHA-1 hash of any file. Streamed in chunks, so large files work without freezing the browser.

What is SHA-1 file hashing?
SHA-1 produces a 160-bit fingerprint of a file. It is the hash used by Git to identify objects, and by many legacy integrity systems. Because a practical collision attack was published in 2017 (SHAttered), SHA-1 is no longer recommended for security-sensitive uses; for file verification prefer SHA-256.
How to use
Drag, click, or paste a file. The tool streams the file in chunks and computes SHA-1 as it reads, so memory usage stays flat and the UI stays responsive even for very large files.
FAQ
Are files uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser.
Why does my SHA-1 differ from another tool?
Confirm the file is byte-identical and neither tool is applying text-mode translation (line ending conversion). Use binary mode everywhere.
Is SHA-1 still safe?
Not against a determined attacker. Use SHA-256 or SHA-3 for anything security-sensitive. SHA-1 remains fine for detecting accidental corruption.
How does this compare to Git's SHA-1?
Git prepends a header ("blob N ") to the content before hashing. This tool hashes the raw file bytes, matching md5sum/sha1sum behavior, not Git's internal object ID.
