What is BLAKE?
BLAKE is a family of cryptographic hashes designed by Jean-Philippe Aumasson, Luca Henzen, Willi Meier, and Raphael C.-W. Phan. BLAKE2 (2012) and BLAKE3 (2020) are faster than MD5 on 64-bit CPUs while remaining cryptographically strong.
BLAKE2 was a finalist in the SHA-3 competition and is widely deployed. BLAKE2b targets 64-bit CPUs (up to 64-byte output), BLAKE2s targets smaller devices (up to 32-byte output).
BLAKE3 is a newer design that is faster and supports arbitrary output length. It is used in content-addressed storage and high-throughput applications.
FAQ
Is BLAKE safe?
Yes. BLAKE2 and BLAKE3 have no known practical attacks.
BLAKE2b vs BLAKE2s
BLAKE2b is faster on 64-bit hardware, up to 64-byte output. BLAKE2s is faster on small devices, up to 32-byte output.
Is BLAKE3 the same as BLAKE2?
No. BLAKE3 is a distinct design that is faster and parallelizable. It is not compatible with BLAKE2.
